Minecraft Name: bandgeek12345 Suggestion: change all bans to IP bans Reason: users that have been banned sometime turn to alt to continue to harm the community. Any Other Information: an IP should prevent any alts to be allowed onto ECC from the same user. in the event of a ban on a user, alts are not allowed to play on ECC for obvious reasons. leaving alts open to join the server if they are never caught just causes trouble for the loyal and rule following users. i think this idea will cut down on all the alt scamming, which makes up quite a bit of the issues seen in the user complaint section. example. alt accounting is like wearing a mask to enter a store you have been banned in.. your the same person behind the doing. you just look different.. an ip ban is like checking your DNA before entering a store.. u cant fudge the truth. and if you could it wouldnt be worth the time or effort required. [edit] to clear confusion. if 2 different people on the same IP took the proper action upon joining they wouldnt be effected. this suggestion is not to remove username bans. username bans will still exist for special cases when the proper precautions were taken.
So if I get banned my son couldn't play? (using me as an example ofcourse) Sounds a little unfair to me. And what about people I know 100% are brother and sister? One of them gets themselves banned the other has to suffer too?
I don't think this is needed. If a player has a sibling playing on the same IP, and it's been noted, the sibling should be allowed to play. However, if a player is banned on an IP, and a new, undocumented user logs in from that IP, they are unbanned as well.
but people (like me) who set up each accounts at different IPs Wouldnt get caught (my alt has a different ip than me)
if the 2 followed the rules and reported that they are indeed separate people playing on the same ip then now the other wont be banned. exeptions can be made im sure. if 2 users brother and sister play together and 1 gets banned.. the other does as well for alting.. its in the rules. and ive seen it happen multiple times in the complaints/appeals forum.
If multiple users are playing on the same IP, it should have been reported to a staff member upon joining the server.. im user username bans can be made as an exception in these cases
-1 You just don't know if they're brother/sister. Like jakey said, most of the time this is the case.
-1 People with family on the same ip that play the server would be affected, when they didnt do anything.
honestly does nobody read replies? you all instantly take jakeys side due to him being a high rank staff member. read things, think about them, then reply please. i want genuine feedback on this suggestion.
Wow, never thought I would see this account used again - welcome back Iticip... err Aqqel... err Billybue... err... Usaf524... err Maxlobue... err... can't even remember them all. You are by far the master of alt accounting and no IP ban will ever effect you as you are also the master of the VPN!
Staff cannot be expected to remember every user on every ip address to ensure that username bans are using in those situations. We can however use Ip bans when the situation arises that one is needed.
i had no intention of creating extra strain to the staff. im sure among the staff there is documents/logs to keep track of thing. an extra log to keep track of exeptions would probably solve this issue.
Ofcourse there is a log of everyone who shares an ip with anyone that we know about, but in situations there often isn't time to tab out and check if we should be using a username ban rather then an ip ban, users already complain that we are slow to ban advertisers or similar. To have to check the thread everytime we banned to know what sort of ban to use would be a lot of extra work and time having to be required to be done rather then just banning the guy and if he bypassing then ip banning him.
i understand that with an extra step it would slow the moderating process. but can be resolved by order of importance.. example. "first step" mod sees advertiser.. ban advertiser. "second step" tab out for a second. check the doc.. [note] should be open in the background for convenience. check name.. not found "third step" ip ban advertiser. it does add more steps to the banning process, but as a very active user of ECC i would feel alot safer knowing that advertiser cant jump on his 25 alts and advertise every day for the next 25 days. same process would apply for any type of ban. just a quick glance to the mod/staff doc and done.
I think there could be an easy fix. There should be plugins out there that notify you if someone from the same IP of a banned user logs in. SMods+ could have access to that notification, I suppose.
its a great idea in concept. but would put too much strain on the server due to it running an IP check on anyone that logs in. and it cant be a 1 time thing because users get banned at different times.. it would inpact server performance and its connection greatly.. [edit] it would also need a custom plugin that one of the devs would have to make.
