I now sleep on a $5000 couch, in a basement.

Is that Norton? :| If you don't download questionable things and read things before clicking, then viruses really are not a problem. Windows defender is enough (already there in windows 8) if you make sure you only click legit tabs, never download programs sent via e-mail, and never visit "questionable" sites.

Also, go to the microsoft store and update your OS to windows 8.1. Trust me... It's plenty better than 8 and it works pretty much like 7 if you learn all the tricks of it ;)

 

I have Norton just incase. Always good to have it.

Windows 8.1 or just plain windows defender? I know a lot of people hate windows 8, but those are just haters. If you get used to 8.1 enough, you'll actually like it. The only problem I have with it is the metro UI as it is bad for non-touch screens. If you want to hate windows 8.1, go ahead, but I really don't see much wrong with it as it was released with zero known bugs and it runs fast and smooth for me.

If you're talking about antivirus, it's actually not that bad advice. If you exercise caution and don't download those FREE IPAD e-mails, click those trojans, open up questionable sites, download random crap, and read what the downloads are actually downloading, you won't get a virus/malware/adware. I've been doing this since I got my computer a few years ago and I still have no viruses. (and no, I'm not ignoring anything on my system, I scan it 1-2 times a week using either avast free or windows defender.) It's not crazy, a lot of people do it.

Norton isn't really the problem(slows down your PC slightly)(I just recommend using a free antivirus as if you exercise safe browsing and downloading strategies, it's practically impossible to get a virus as viruses only get on your system if you let them either intentionally or not. It's just that you should probably upgrade your OS to windows 8.1 in the windows app store. You will love the update cause you can skip the tile UI if you want and you get your windows button back. After that, it's essentially windows 7 with a 20 second boot-up time :). (BTW, it's an upgrade so you don't lose files)

 

Recommending that an average user not use a third party anti-virus software is the part I am saying you shouldn't really be doing. However, Norton is a giant waste of space and resources, you're better off with just Windows Defender than with that.
