Suggestion: Make "self-censorship of a swear word of abbreviations" illegal.
Clause 2 - Vulgarity
Reason: Saying stuff such as s**t or f*ck is really no different than saying the real thing for the reason that just about everyone knows what you are saying and what you intend to say. It has the same effect as swearing you just get away with it.
- Inappropriate and vulgar language is not allowed. This includes anything put on signs, said in chat, written in books, renamed to on items (see Section 3 Clause 2.1), spelt out in blocks, or any other way of communicating.
- Occasional mild to moderate vulgarities that are not directed at anyone (such as "slip-ups" or saying them in the incorrect chat by accident), self-censorship of a swear word or abbreviations that may imply a swear word (ie. WTF?) are allowed.
- Repeated or excessive swearing, and especially vulgar language directed at anyone, is not tolerated under any circumstance.
- Racist language of any sort falls under the vulgarity rule, and is considered a very serious offence, punishment of which may not warrant a warning before being given.

+1 I agree censoring a word in such an obvious way already places the word in the users mind.
For example: F-word, bish, d**k they are all words that the user will think about when reading it which is just the same as saying them allowed. If your going to cuss take the punishment and say it. Don't dirty other people's minds by planting the word in their thoughts. -
Many, many suggestions have been made for more censorship - including disallowing abbreviations and such.
Most (not all, but many) people who have the biggest issue with swearing and vulgar language are those who are worried about young kids learning words. When these words are "masked" in other ways (especially with *), it is far less likely that kids will learn the words. Or, in the very least, learn far less harsh version.
As well, disallowing abbreviations and self censorship will not change the amount of swearing and vulgar language there is in-game. If anything, it will further encourage using the uncensored and non-abbreviated words and teach younger people far worse words. As well, there are some self-censorships and abbreviations that people still will not know...
How I see it: Disallowing abbreviations and self censorship will promote regular swearing and vulgar language. More people understand the unfiltered language and get far more upset by it. Kids will not know or be as likely to learn the abbreviations or self censorship.
edit: Also, there are a few younger (and older) Staff who do not know all of the abbreviations and self censored words... This could cause issues with, "I was warned but he wasn't!" -

About what you are saying that people would use vulgar language without censorship if it was disallowed with censorship. I see it that people only use censorship because they know they can swear without being punished, however I honestly don't know how they would react if they did get punished for that.
As for the staff part I just assumed all staff would know all the vulgar language.-

I would like to point out @MoofinK you said abriviations will stop younger kids from learning swear words but ... they will just learn the shortened versions of the same words but spelt differently? I think the saying goes "take your poison one sip at a time" it's the exact same result to allow censoring of words, to just letting people swear isn't it. If censorship was illegal players would be warned anyways and possibly banned so your claim this will increase swearing is false because it's an offense now that's the point of making it "illegal"? It's simple self control and presently to other players is that really so hard for players to do?
I feel this server has more class and professionalism then other servers. This isn't some second rate mini-server where anyone can just swear or say whatever they want. All of ECC players have different backgrounds and have contributed to the server in their own way. I feel they deserve to be treated with proper respect don't u?
This is completely my personal opinion because I was raised to not use such language at all because it's not accepted by the general populous to be a proper way to address others but maybe other players views are different? I don't know but that's what I feel is the professional and correct thing to do and that's the last I will say on this topic. -

d**k - "But I was just saying dork." - I think you will get a lot of this. More than there is now.
bish... I actually had to think about that one. I was like, what is wrong with that? I had to think and be like, "If that was bad, what could it be...." After 30sec or so, I finally got it.
Do you really want the mods to be sitting there thinking.. "If that word is said with a lisp and underwater, it could be thought to be something that resembles a vulgar word....hmm... Banned!"
If the vulgarity is blatant, apparent, or excessive, I can understand a warning and further action depending on the severity. But as the rule states, an occasional slip-up or WTF (what the fudge) is perfectly acceptable. Some people think 'shit' is too far, others 'damn'. If I say darn, are you going to kick me? Is that where this is going? Darn reminds you of damn and therefor shouldn't be allowed?
"Emau, 'gosh darn it' is taking it too far, you should have said 'golly gee willikers' instead."
Take the compromise that it isn't extreme one way or another, and report those you feel continue to abuse the system.-

i have to -1 this greg sorry but banning words like wtf and stuff is just dumb. there are enough rules for chat i understand kids dont need to see these words but that is also the parents responsibility at making sure they know what they are doing. they are going to learn these words no matter what tv/school/online/reading/people cursing is everywhere around us no way to get away from it self control is key here not adding more chat rules.

I believe that if parents allow children to play the server, they will no how much it swears and will decide if it is appropriate for their children. In other words, if you don't want to hear it, disconnect. Don't punish people for the way they speak. Vulgarity, yes, but swearing, no.
-
Thinking about this I remember certain servers which have a censor plugin that puts random words for swear words or thing like "lag" or "glitch"
Lag was "Cheese" btw :p -

Staff have guidelines reguarding this stuff. Here's generally how I approach a situation in chat: regardless if a vulgarity is written plainly or censored out, I check the context. If the context of the vulgarity is directed at someone/group of someones, I warn. If the context is self rage, I may not warn unless it's overkill and excessive.
In my understanding, the rule does not absolve censorship from moderation, it includes censorship and plainly written vulgarity in a context clause.-

My parents would abbreviate letters when they were speaking, i.e. a.s.s and I would never pick up on it until I was eight, when most children begin to learn swears. Overall, young kids really don't have enough knowledge to figure out if the word is a curse word or just a normal, misspelled word. If I'm not mistaken, the average server age is 11-17, most of those users should know the words and right from wrong. I really don't even think this will be added. -1

If its abbreviated, then it really doesn't matter. Sure, if you know the word then you will think of it, but the main reason why cussing is not allowed is because ECC is a child friendly server, and we don't want to expose them to this kind of language.
