some questions

what is the depth of the underground railway and the width of the tunnels (I was already building a train station)

I'll join. But I'm still in the process of building my town, so I don't have much time to build a station (I plan on building one however). I have plans on connecting it too (I'm building massive road(s)/viaduct(s) that will connect my city with the rest of the world (I'm @ x = -2056, z = -2097 -> roughly), and once Andrew updates the world render, you'll see I've started on the roads -> they go towards S and W). So those portions of the rail system will be done by me :) (the rails will be underneath the road).
Once I get the walls of my town done, I'll do the station first thing though, and start the "tunnels" under the roads.
If you want to see whats going on in game, just /msg me and Ill let you through the gate in the portal room.

Edit (again): I'm also mining out a huge area underground for a cavern, so if you need cobble/coal to make smooth stone, you can come get it from my city... for $FREE.99!

 

i think a 5x5 is a good size or make 2 tunnels of 3x3 (those are the sizes of my now partly rolledback station)

Just because you (and other users that are working on the project -> like me -> I've started my tunnels, station, etc) don't have enough gold, doesn't mean you have to stop construction all together. You can probably still continue to build the tunnels/causeways/bridges/rail beds that the rails will go along. That way, as you are building these (and getting stone etc) to build this stuff, you may find gold, iron, etc to build rails, along with other resources you can sell to buy more supplies (such as gold). You have to continue forging ahead, or it will not be completed (which will be a sad day, since the idea of the railway is great).

So my suggestion is to keep working towards the goal; get the bridges, tunnels, stations, and rail beds (places where the rails will go -> clearly marked to stop people from building there), then, once WE (yes, this is a community project, so we have to work together on this) get enough supplies, we can outfit each station (if not done so already) and then start connecting each station.

We can do this Ike, we just all have to pull together :D

If I continue my road/rails straight south from my city, I think it will run in front of mob town, and under yours, so we'll have to probably figure out how to connect everything somehow in the near future.

 

i have made a new station on top of an island so it will be easier to connect the rails

Okay, cool. I wasn't sure what was up Ike. Sounded like you need a pep talk. haha.

And If we need smooth stone -> like I said before, I'm hollowing out an area that is roughly 160x160x40 under my town, which is providing alot of cobble (and iron actually... which is surprising). Which I've been turning into smooth stone (also for my town) by using the charcoal method (trees -> logs + planks + furnace; I know you probably know this method, but it seems not alot of people do it, and then say they can't find coal *shrugs*).

Nah, I'm don't do that. I asked you how you build your tree in your town (since I'll be building one myself -> might ask you to do it, if you can and are willing), and I used a shortened version of your name (only the first 3 letters), which was a *kinda* bad word in Swedish (I think), so you corrected me, and told me to use Luuk, or something else I can't remember now...

 

Maybe you all could convince andy to dramatically drop the prices of rails & powered rails during construction of the actual system, discouraging greifing :)
