With the recent price changes for fish, I decided to do a little math.

    For an unenchanted fishing rod:
According to the Minecraft Wiki, it takes anywhere between 5 and 45 seconds to catch a fish. This gives us an average of 25 seconds. There are 3600 seconds in an hour, so 3600/25 = 144 fish/hr. The wiki also says that there is an 85% chance of catching fish (15% for junk or treasure) every time you catch something. .85*144 gives us ~122 of those catches being fish. It then says 60% of fish caught are regular fish, 25% are salmon, 2% are clownfish, and 13% are pufferfish. If we multiply those percentages by 122, we get ~73 fish, ~31 salmon, ~2 clownfish, and ~16 pufferfish. If we take the latest prices, (20/fish, 30/salmon, 50/clownfish, 40/pufferfish) it comes out to $1460 for fish, $930 for salmon, $100 for clownfish, and $640 for pufferfish, or $3130/hr total. However, this is at maximum efficiency, or if you did nothing but fish for an hour. It would probably be closer to $2500 if you were realistic.
NOTE: This would also take 2 or 3 rods/hr to do, as unenchanted rods can only take 65 catches before breaking.

But let's assume you have a Lure 3 Unbreaking 3 rod. On the wiki, it says it decreases catch time by 100 ticks, or five seconds, per level. This would mean that your catch window is now 0? (not sure about this) to 30 seconds, giving us an average of 15. This ups your catch rate to 240 catches per hour, meaning 204 fish per hour. If we do the calculations we did before, we get ~122 fish, 51 salmon, ~4 clownfish, and ~27 pufferfish. This means $2440, $1530, $200, and $1080, or $5250 total. But again, this is assuming maximum efficiency, so a more realistic estimate would probably turn out to be in the $4000 range.

Whew! That was a lot of numbers. If you have any questions, or think I did something wrong (I probably did) feel free to post below.

3k/hr max rod, and 10k/hr star-rod based off of actual fishing result averages taken from 10 minute tests multiplied by 6.
Note, because of mcmmo's effect on fishing luck3 doesn't do much.

I feel the best way to make money is mine with a diamond pick, save exp sell all ores, and get a silk touch pick. Sell those ores at station 70 then but exp until u have enough for atleast eff3 unbreaking 3 and fortune 3. Then mine till you die of old age :)

Mining still makes you more than fishing, but it requires more attention.
