The MCMMO mod on the server gives us our /mining levels and allows us certain perks. I was trying to figure out the data values attributed to each block that we mine to get a better understanding of what's the most worthwhile method of leveling mining level. Here are the xp values:

    Stone - 3 XP
    Coal - 6 XP
    Redstone - 6 XP
    Lapis Lazuli - 9 XP
    Iron - 9 XP
    Gold - 9 XP
    Diamond - 12 XP
    Emerald - 12 XP

This data shows that it's actually more effective to mine out coal rather than just leave it in the wall. Despite it being a lower value/brick comparatively to Redstone, it still is more worthwhile to mine it in hopes of eventually being connected to another high-value block.

However it should also be noted that this is all highly subjective if someone was using high efficiency picks since the speed might be higher if you stay in a 1x2 path ignoring low value xp like coal and aiming for everything else since xp gains would be faster and you would want to re-coop whatever money/time spent on getting high eff pick(s).

Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Yes I agree to getting coal. The only time I would not get it if I was using a eff7. Coal gives you alot of exp and if using fort3 it gives you tons of coal.

That would be very beneficial to me because mining and getting/selling exp is how I make a large portion of my money. :D

Wonderful info you have here! Very helpful. I too, would like to know the exp gains. As my computer can not handle the massive amount of chunk updates that comes with farming, (and it is boring), mining is currently my main source of income.
