ValleyHope Progress Report May 4, 2016 May the fourth be with you! I updated the clock tower. Its short height always bugged me so I finally bit the bullet and destroyed then rebuilt the top half to make it about twice as tall. I also changed the town streets to a simpler design and added light post throughout. Apr 23, 2016 Welcome @rsdworker as our new Co-Mayor. Mar 30, 2016 After a sabbatical Mayor gotbot is back on ECC. Cleaning up the town and clearing plots of inactive players. Nov 29, 2015 Valleyhope is SOLD OUT! All shops and plots have been sold. Thank you everybody for your support. Nov 26, 2015 We've been open for 2 weeks and already we have an active, lively community. All our shops have been rented or purchased. Most of our plots have been purchased. We have 2 30x30 plots open, 2 20x20 plots and 4 10x10 plots left. There are also many apartments still available. There is still time to get your place in town! Nov 14, 2015 Valleyhope is officially open! Nov 7, 2015 We are getting close to opening day. The latest addition to the commercial district is Valley Hope Public Library. We're continuing to expand subterranean farms. The city wall is finally completed! Roads are done and I've created pathways that connect plots to the roads. Lots going on! Oct 20, 2015 It's been awhile since my last update, but I've remained busy preparing ValleyHope for residents. I've added two fishing towers for use by residents, a "starbucks" coffee shop, and I've continued construction of the city wall, road infrastructure and farms. The pumpkin farm will have nine levels when completed. I expanded the cocoa-bean farm and it now yields around 4K per harvest after re-planting. Oct 10, 2015 Small cocoa farm is up and running to bring in some income while town development continues. Third building in the commercial district is completed. It's a sandstone and blue glass office tower. Continuing paving and landscaping work. Oct 5, 2015 Cocoa farm construction in progress. There will be two sections, one for manual harvest for those working on Herbalism skills, and one semi-automated with water harvesting. Furnishing of second commercial building is under way. Two modern-style pre-built homes built. City Hall furnishing in proress. Sep 30, 2015 Second commercial building: completed structure, fire escape, balcony railings, roof air handler, interior walls, ceilings and doors. There are a total of 3 residential shops on the ground floor, with 9 apartments above on three floors. All that remains is interior furniture and decorating. Sep 29, 2015 Good progress on second commercial building. Started construction of city wall. Continued progress on town farms. Sep 28, 2015 Second commercial building is under construction. Excavation beneath the town for farms was started over the weekend. Thanks to @Izbj and @icantthinkofanam for their help with that. We got a good start! Pumpkin farm construction has begun. Sep 25, 2015 First commercial building fully lit and furnished. Second commercial building is under construction. It will feature ground-floor resident-run shops and apartments. My son built a clock-tower for the town near City Hall. He did a fantastic job. More plots landscaped and road construction continues. Sep 24, 2015 Road design is decided and road construction has begun. The first commercial building is completed. Shop on the ground floor with 5 apartments stacked above. Sep 22, 2015 Worked on landscape around City Hall and Commercial District. Cleaned up and terraformed several more residential plots. Experimenting with different road designs, not happy with any yet. Sep 21, 2015 All major zoning borders are in place including all plot placements. Each plot will be re-visited in the near future to finish terraforming and beautification. Natural topography will be retained to a certain extent, but shaped a bit to provide better visual flow. ValleyHope won't be a flat town. I find it more interesting to both build and look upon structures that work with the land. Contruction of City Hall is well under way. The main structure is in place. Trim, lighting and interior design is next.
ValleyHope Official Rules All server rules are in effect in ValleyHope. This includes basic rules about language and general standards of behavior. No trolling. Deliberately offensive or provocative chat or messaging with the aim of upsetting someone or eliciting an angry response will result in removal from the town. No spamming the local chat channel. No harassment of the mayors. Please remember that town owners/officers are not your employees. No griefing. This includes altering or destroying public buildings and roads, as well as all the other destructive behaviors already prohibited by the server. Placing LWCs or breaking or placing ANY blocks without permission outside your plot is also griefing. No stealing from other town residents, regardless of whether their belongings are in locked chests. Do not build on or anywhere outside the dark oak plot outlines. They are not part of your plot, so don't build where they are, and do not remove them. They are how we keep track of land ownership. Do not obscure access to or visibility of the locked sign on one one corner of your plot. It is the only written record of your property ownership. The public farm is a shared resource, and MUST be replanted after every harvest. Failure or "forgetting" to replant counts as griefing. If you inactive for more than 30 days, and have not notified Mayor @gotbot, your plot may be cleared and resold at any time. Maximum building height is 50 and you may go down by 15 blocks. No mining under the town. Calculate your height limit from the ground level of your plot. No plain or generic builds. Don't build your house entirely out of dirt, cobblestone or with all the same block type. Shops may only be built in the designated commercial area. To secure a shop plot, contact Mayor @gotbot. Any other trade signs will be removed. Secure your belongings inside your house. Learn to use LWC commands. The town is not responsible for things you lose otherwise. Behave yourself! If you don't like people, pretend you do and still play nice.
I just ranked up to Mayor and have claimed my 200x200 town plot! ValleyHope will be a master-plan community with residential zones, a commercial district and city parks at ground level. My initial thought was that farming platforms will float above the city. But after helpful feedback from @SuburbSomeone, I agree that having farms above and shadowing the town would feel oppressive. So instead we will have subterranean farms. They will be available to ValleyHope residents for free and open to non-residents for a fee. Beautiful architecture will be highly valued in ValleyHope and my hope is to create a thriving community of players who love to build. This first post is just to introduce my new town. Building is underway but it will be some time before I'm ready to open up plots for sale. Here is my town plan. I would love constructive feedback on the zoning allocations and the layout. I'm also eager to learn from those who have gone before me. I know very little about building and managing a town but the journey has begun! This plot map is for the surface layer.
If you haven't already, I recommend checking out jmichael's thread here. I have no experience running a town, but he most certainly does.
I'd also suggest making the farm underground or in another town if possible. I personally find it a bit claustrophobic to be in a town where the farm darkens everything. Do /warp laptown for an example.
Thanks for the suggestion, there is alot of great information there. Edit: oops, responded to the wrong post.
Thanks, I will definitely go visit Laptown to see an example. This is actually something I've been wondering about, that is, if an overhead farm casting a shadow on the city is a good idea or not. Probably not.
After experimenting with different designs, I've decided on the road style that ValleyHope will use. On the spectrum of styles from cobbled rustic to ice and glass super modern, I wanted something in between that looks somewhat modern but not too futuristic, a "clean" look but with some visual variation to add texture to the flow.
Here's the first building finished in the commercial district. The ground floor is a shop that can be rented by residents of ValleyHope. It is my goal to make this district a busy destination for many buyers. Above the shop are apartments for rent. Several will be offered for free to the first builders who PM me on opening day.
The second commercial Building is built. Three residential shops on the ground level, with nine apartments, three on each floor, above. Furnishing and interior decorating has not yet been completed.
