Agreed, however, you can do as much research as you want through text/voice/actions, but that's not going to stop them from messing with the server in the future. You can't read minds, therefor you don't know if they would conduct poor actions as staff. At the same time, you take that risk when promoting any user in general, just the chance of them doing something detrimental is a risky increase that we shouldn't take. We have a great track record, you're right, but this is such a risk that we should 100% guarantee it won't happen again. Instead of wasting time in looking into this user, when they could simply lie their way straight through the logs, and onto the staff team, look for somebody that fits the role a lot better.
I understand where the both of you are coming from, people change, of course. However, is it really worth the risk? Sure, it has proven thus far, but the negative heavily outweighs the positive in my opinion. If a user decided to abuse their powers simply because their down with the server. If I were to join the server at this time, and find out I have somebody with complete power over me, has been perma-banned in the past for 9 months, I would consider leaving the server for sure. What sort of representation does that give the staff team?
What if I, or any other user left the server because of the poor representation of the staff team? When those very users could of been exceptional donators, or even, staff members. It's simply not worth the risk to give someone that abused the server with so little power, even more power to do more damage.

I'm not going to lie, no disrespect, but it makes the staff team look embarrassing and not prestigious at all to have someone w/ a track record as such, representing the server and having so much power. We should consider, past, present, and future. Past weighs towards abuse. Present slightly weighs towards abuse. Future weighs towards abuse. The past makes the present & future impacted heavily. If you take a user that was perma-banned in the past, they heavily weigh towards abuse. Obviously, we take this on a person - person basis.-

+1 I clearly agree, but Its easy to tell there's plenty of favoritism involved when staff vote, and that's the problem. I know _john_galt has never been perma banned, never even been banned, has only had 1 complaint against him, and has donated a ton, but it seems someone that has been perma banned, attempted to scam, and has broken several rules, some how, some way gets staff, how is this fair at all to the players. Kuke, you can sit there and say there is no favoritism involved, but you would be clearly wrong, based off observations, and speaking with ex staff its quite obvious. I think this needs to be implemented, and there needs to be stricter rules on how someone is picked for staff.

It makes the staff team look embarrassing? It's embarrassing when someone who gets staff abuses his features or power in no time. We've had those. We've had many of those. And the majority of those people were NOT EVER PERMABANNED.
We've had a handful of permabanned users on staff. From which only 1 got demoted for being abusive with their power/features.
You can't write off a group of people because you think they're not fit because of things that happened in the past, people can change, people learn from their mistakes. I know there's a couple of repeat offenders, but those people are generally not accepted to staff. Every once in a while someone slips through, but it doesn't take long before they're gone again.
I also took the past into consideration, heavily even. But their current behaviour is what weighs the heaviest in my decisions. If someone has a past of abuse, but currently has an amazing staff app and an amazing track record SINCE THE BAN. Then I will consider picking that user for staff. (Of course, a mass exploiter or something else really serious will weigh heavier, the severity of the ban matters)
Your suggestion assumes permabanned people are the problem. That's not the case, it's the people who get on staff and THEN ABUSE THEIR FEATURES. Not before. The majority of users who got on staff made a complete 180 after their ban.
tl;dr: quit the narrowminded bs-

Should we just lock this, cause as again kuke thinks his opinion is the only one that matters.

Lol relax, i'm not being narrowminded, just because I provided a counter-argument, doesn't mean I completely ignored you & KH's opinion. I just stated that I disagreed with some things. Just because you disagreed with my opinion, I didn't say your opinion was narrow-minded. You clearly read my post wrong if you thought that. I posted right in the suggestion "If you have a counter-argument, i'd love to hear it, so hopefully myself, and those also upset by allowing this, understand your opinion. " If you have the counter-argument, say it, calling me narrow-minded isn't a counter argument.
It does make the staff team look embarrassed, though that may not be right or wrong, I've heard from so many users complaining about recent promotions in relation to this topic. People may change, but that doesn't change the communities point of view on that player. Even if somebody says over text that they changed, that isn't going to make me or anyone else forget about their Perma-Ban. Upon joining the server, you accept the rules, if not, you're punished. Those who break the rules to an even bigger extent are Perma-Banned, they shouldn't get a second chance at the server, let alone more power.
Like you said, abuse can happen Perma-Banned or not, however, the players general point of view on the staff team should matter.. Who wants to look up to someone like that? I sure don't. That's just an opinion though, I wouldn't want a person who killed somebody, 10 years later return as a Police Officer and have myself being "protected" by them, when they can just easily snap in a second. It's not worth the risk in my opinion, when we can just find better track-recorded applicants.
Don't we promote Staff as our role-models? There's tons of staff that I look up to as role-models, changed or not, someone who was Perma-Banned I don't want to look up to. They made a complete mockery of the staff team, our rules, and the community. Screw what they "say" in an application. Just because something has happened, doesn't mean we shouldn't prepare for it. This is a small change that'll only benefit the server in a positive way, besides possibly loosing a exceptional staff member. Which I understand, but it's simply not worth the risk, in my opinion.-

I have to disagree with this suggestion.
Even if a user was "permabanned" at some point, they were unbanned for a reason and have the opportunity to apply for staff.-

Actually lock, I understand now, maybe myself & those who disagree with a decision should just make a staff complaint.
I was just trying to emphasis that most people don't want to look up to someone that has done major harm to the server in the past, that's not what I thought the staff team was like. I thought we chose hard-workers, people who respected the rules, both in the past, present, and future.
In our staff applications, there's this question ; "How have you been helping the community grow bigger and better? How will you help the server once you are a Moderator?"
Yes, because you were helping the server grow bigger by promoting a different server you were staff on, that makes sense. So you should be given staff to represent the staff team as a whole.
Anyways, I don't want to be flaming on anyone, but it's pretty obvious who i'm directing this towards. Reading Kuke's/KH's opinion made me double think about this, that it should be more directed as a staff complaint, not a system set. Thanks everyone for their opinions.
Mod please lock.
