Then this suggestion should be described explicitly as such, not as a systematic suggestion to hand over warnings to anyone who happens to let out a swear word for the first time.

I would completely agree with you @Ladyvamptress, I too do not like seeing the general rudeness of some people. Now I know that some people may 'slip up' but like you said when you are typing how is it possible to 'slip up'? I would like to see harsher punishments for those people.

I don't know if this has been mentioned/you know this but we do now have a command that lets us see warnings/let's us put a note on people so we can see what's been happening in the past hours.

What are you talking about? Do you even know what a 'society' is? You are the second person to bring up about what society accepts and what it doesn't. Society isn't one large group of people forced to agree upon something because then societies wouldn't exists as there will always be someone who disagrees. Society is a group of like-minded people which do agree on something. But just because they agree, doesn't mean everyone does! Let me break it down with some examples. You say that 'society' accepts words like "kill"? Well my 7 year old was suspended from school for 1 day for using that word. Because the people around me, in my geographical location find that word offensive. Another example. I cuss like a sailor around my dad, my boyfriend, my best friend, even my best friends mom... but I'd not dare cuss around my kid's teacher, my boyfriends parents, a cop, etc! Why? Because I know when it's acceptable and when it's not. Just like anything else some people will see no problem with it as others will take offense to it! It's not about what's acceptable, but rather who accepts it. It's about knowing when it's ok to say it and when it's not. I feel being allowed to say it on a family friendly server is like walking into a daycare and just yelling out the F-word. *Shrugs*

The highlighted part is exactly what my gripe is. I'm sorry if I was not clear in my first post. Thank you for pointing that out, maybe I should go back and reword somethings to save on confusion. The problem is staff can't keep tract of who does it often now so they are just saying "watch your language" to everyone over and over, but it's still a warning none the less and it hasn't scared anyone off yet! I suggested the /warn system because at least it's documented until the logs are wiped and staff who didn't know a user was already warned can then see that they were. It's not fair to let one person get away with cussing while another gets warned. Rules currently state that cussing is not allowed. It even goes on to say the forms that cussing isn't allowed in. However! The part about it being ok as a slip up, allows repeat offenders wiggle room. It even says in the rules slip ups are allowed as long as it's not directed at another users. Well if it's not ok to direct it at another user it shouldn't be ok to say it in the presence of other users. As I've said before they are nasty words that you wouldn't say in front of just anyone. Just to make it easier, don't allow it at all and warn people who do it. If they continue, take further action! This is all I'm asking for.

Yeah I'm aware of the /note system. When I was staff, other staff would verbally warn users for vulgar language and then not note it, so not all staff knew said user was warned. It was also said that when warning people, staff don't have enough time to check notes before issuing the warning. I know my suggestion is not perfect and I'm not saying that my suggested punishment needs to be applied. I'm just saying that allowing censorship of the cuss words is lead way enough and that anyone who using a cuss words needs warned and then if it continues, more needs to be done as the warning didn't work... so move on to the next step.

You clearly didn't read my post, at all. I simply stated some strange things I've noticed in society and how strange it would look to an outsider. Just some food for thought was all it was.

Please learn and understand what you are serving before offering it because your point is invalid to the suggestion, but I do appreciate your time and for trying to give me some insight. I'm not here to debate on whether it's ok to cuss or not. ECC has already set a rule stating it's not and people like you and I who have ranked up have read and agreed to those rules. It's the handful of users who are abusing the rules that is the issue and that has nothing to do with what society accepts. Thank you for your input, means a lot to me! <3

Now, personally speaking on the suggestion, I don't think the swearing rule should be harsher. It's something that I think should personally be relaxed. However, that's not the main point of this suggestion, rather, the implementation of the rule.

Here's where we run into the problem, it's a rigid system. This suggestion is basically creating a system that requires staff to have a three step process, no matter what the case basis is. For example, if I get killed by buffer and drop the F-bomb, it's much more different than me simply dropping it in normal conversation, correct? Now, neither are truly "justifiable" in your standpoint, which I understand from the view of a concerned parent. However, both of these users would receive a warning. Flash forward ten minutes and the same thing happens again. Both users receive kicks. After fifteen minutes, it happens again, boom, they're banned. Now, one user one could argue was justifiably banned (normal conversation), while the other who was just raging really was not justifiably banned, no matter who you ask.

I forget where I saw this post, but it said that staff shouldn't be kept to a rigid system, similar to something you're suggesting here. As @quefueve said, the vulgarity clause is one that is kept to a case by case basis, and should remain that way. Why? Because it's in the eye of the beholder, no matter whom that is. Whether it be a parent or a child, you have to understand where the other person is coming from at the time on the other end. Whether they were talking and said something bad, or they were raging. You have to keep it to a case by case basis.

I'd also like to elaborate on what @generaljoecool was saying. A kick is a serious moderation step, without a doubt. Kicking someone for their second warning is almost authoritarian in the sense you haven't given them that much of a chance to redeem themselves. I would give someone three warnings before I would even think about kicking someone. Kicks are serious, and shouldn't be dealt out like candy. Before you know it, it'll become the warn system we have in-game, taken as a joke by the majority.

To even elaborate more, it does create this idea that staff are all and powerful, and the users are their subjects. I don't know about you, but if I said two curse words, and was kicked, I'd be pretty concerned and would want to leave the server. I just don't believe it would effectively create harmony between both the players and staff members, something that Phys is trying to create.

I guess the people with the opinion of needing more stringent rule enforcement would be us older types. Parents, teachers, priests, etc. that do not think anyone should just get warning after warning after warning. Says right on the advertisement "Family Friendly Server"

Let's put this in perspective. *puts on analogy hat*

Disney World (and all other Disney areas) are the epitome of "Family Friendly" I can't personally think of anything MORE "Family Friendly" than Disney parks.

    a) How many times do you think one of the employees playing one of the characters (Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, etc.) gets warned if they drop an F=bomb on, let's say Main Street USA (central entrance into Magic Kingdom)

Zero. They are fired, on the spot (actually, as soon as they can be moved the "backstage" to minimize disruption) [banned on first offense]

    b) How many times are guests of the parks allowed to drop f-bombs (or behave in a non-Family Friendly way)

Three. They are then escorted from the park by the Staff without refund. [banned after 3 warnings]

    *puts analogy hat away*

How Family Friendly is ECC? How Family Friendly do we WANT it to be? Do the rules reflect our goals? Is the enforcement of those rules helping or hindering our goal?

Do we want to be Disney Friendly? What level of Family Friendly do we, as members of ECC, want to be perceived as?

@gstoner3 I just said that to Mission001 earlier today that I guess the people who aren't worried about this situation are the younger generation, lol. @knears2000 you say to each their own, but it's the server's image that takes the hit. Like just brought up, this server claims to be family friendly, but yet they allow some not so family friendly things to go on. You say 3 warnings, but I've seen some people warned several times a day everyday and they continue to cuss! What good are all those warnings doing? What is the next step when warnings don't work? You said staff must give a warning... maybe you should read the rules, but cause if you say a racial slur, you're banned right on the spot, allow me to show you.
So as you can see, some rules that are broken, you don't even need to be warned before being banned. The staff doesn't have to please a rule breaker and they shouldn't. Doesn't matter why you broke the rule, you still broke the rule! Try to argue your way out of something in court and see how much leniency you get there. Staff here are already too relaxed on this rule and it's allowed people to trash up the server with their unneeded vulgarities.

Honestly it's already super relaxed and I believe that is the problem with it, you of most people if not all should know this with your multiple slip ups. Staff may say "So-and-So Please watch your language" But as Lady stated it is later forgotten and/or not checked and the person "slips up" once again. As far as that goes it's very relaxed.

So funny you mention that as I did say something to Mission001 about lil kids gambling when it was first added. The gambling things doesn't really have much to do with my suggestion, but I see you brought it up due to the family friendly server aspect. With the gambling though, parents can intervene and tell their child they cannot participate and they have some control over the situation, but when it comes to other people cussing and very lil being done about it... can't really control that. Which would be why this topic is here.

Whats the point of people getting warned if they don't learn or change anything from it. The whole point of a warn is to do what its called, warn. If people cannot understand what their doing isn't accepted, they will have to learn one way. Some cases are different then others, however sometimes you have to be a bit stricter.

100,000,000 is a valid number, and not spam. There is no need to mini-mod, especially when no rules have been broken. Please try to keep posts on a suggestion relevant to the suggestion itself.

They could also use a censor for certain words (you might need another plugin for that)

But that's totalitarian in the sense.

Should swearing be limited? If it comes to that, sure. But we should never, ever add in a chat plugin like that.

This is true! I've wandered myself why they don't add a filter/censor myself, but I think I heard staff say one time that ones out there are easy to get around... just like how people by-pass the caps filter now. So will still have the same issue in the end. Which makes sense. In the complaint thread I posted in here as an example, it shows people defending the fact that a rule was broken by quoting:
They completely over look the following:

So because of that lil part about slip ups, people seem to over look the fact that it's not ok to swear on this server, so let's just remove the slip ups part and start giving out punishments to people who break the rule and see if that helps. :)

This is exactly what tends to happen when you give an inch - they take a mile. Not to mention that once a player starts swearing, there are many times that several others also "slip-up" - purely by accident I am sure.
The odd thing is that if a racial slur is used, normally a warning is given and then it is ban hammer time if it is repeated - very little moderator tolerance there it seems. This suggestion is simply stating it should be the same for swearing.
In defense of our staff, we as a community also tend to fail in this particular since we rarely file complaints against users who swear. I personally hate filing complaints against anyone but if that is what it takes to get this issue resolved - so be it. It is up to everyone to help our staff enforce rules so they do not have to be the bad "guys".
At least there would be documentation leading to the ban so there would be no surprise. Of course, it would be nice if this would be enforced with a little more than - User warned - User Severely warned - User Very Severely warned - After two warnings - the ban hammer comes out and the swearing will stop Imho.
