IGN: RyanBlocks2 Suggestion: Allow builders to use the shoutbox. Reason: The shoutbox is a fast way to talk to users currently using the forums. As the forums generally have quite a few people on them feedback (if people feel like responding) can be quick and easy. Allowing builders to use the shoutbox would allow them to pose questions to other players on the forums(and maybe have an easier conversation with them than creating a post) immediately after creating an account. Also this might help players get to know new builders who created forum accounts better. Possible Questions: 1. Wont they cause spam? I know I will hear the argument that builders would come on and spam the shoutbox. However, I do not think this would be the case and let me explain why. - Builders have to create an account in order to use the chatbox. Many new players come onto the server, many immidiatly get banned for spam advertising and the like but only a few actually appeal having made accounts for themselves. When a builder makes a forum account he/she is generally interested in playing more on the server. While there are trolls that make forum accounts it is far fewer than those who just type in a server adress on their mincraft and start spamming the chat. There shouldn't be enough spammers to constitute a problem, if there are a few they can be forum banned without much of a problem. 2. Earlier in your reason you said that builders may have an easier time posting a question in the shoutbox than making a thread on the forums. Why do you believe that? When you join the forums there is the shoutbox right up front. People see it and the text and can judge that it is a text window. Creating a thread is a bit more complicated. Most users can find out to go into general and post a thread in a minute or two but they may not be sure if their question is great and they dont want to pose a stupid question to the community or it just feels awkward for them to make a thread. Also, the chatbox is instant. If a builder speaks in the chatbox and gets a response which he/she may not understand fully the builder can respond. They could also get to know people. They could talk to them in game of course however this allows them to do it on the forums when they may not be able to get in game and many users may not be watching chat in game. 3. This is a privilege given to residents. I feel like if this was given to builders I wouldnt have to get much for being a resident. I understand this viewpoint and for some people this may be the point they wont budge on. However, I feel that residents also gain many other things and that sacrificing this small privilage would better allow builders to communicate with the EcocityCraft community on the forums. What else do residents gain? Among with a few in game privilages I think the most important thing residents gain is the milestone itself. I know when I reached resident I was glad just to be a resident, no longer a white builder new to the server. And although perhaps incorrect players trust residents more than builders as they have been on the sever for a longer time frame (In general). Summary: Allowing builders to use the shoutbox would increase their ability to effectively communicate on the forums, allowing them to more easily pose questions and make friends with the EcoCityCraft community. Due to the neccesity of a forum account spam would be limited and although this would take away a small privilage from residents the positive of increased builder commnication would outweigh that negative. Forum accounts are unlimited and free, while minecraft accounts are ~$30 each. It's much easier to spam on the forums than ingame. I agree with 2 and 3.
I actually like all the reasons that Ryan pointed out for allowing Builders access to the Shoutbox. I know that when this was suggested in the past, there were several good reasons NOT to allow this also, but can't remember them atm (I know, wait a few seconds... SOMEone will be along to post them*grin*)
Random people create accounts on the forums, default as builders and create random spammy threads all the time. If they could use the shoutbox, they could spam, advertise other servers/external products, post malicious links and other bad things. Even if you forum banned them, they could create loads of accounts to do this. Just my thoughts :b
If you really wanted to spam the forums, you could just keep making free forum accounts and be practically unbannable. But if it requires resident, you would have to have a mc account for each of the forum accounts and work for a while to get res on each one.
I think they should either be donators or resident+ to use it. I'm scared trolls might create accounts only to troll/spam the shout box.
I have to say the ''spamming trolls'' argument is reasonable, but there are staff on the forums most hours of the day.
Ok, so I understand that if trolls wanted they could make more and more forum accounts. However, I dont think their are that many trolls willing to put effort into spamming the chatbox. If they really wanted to spam they could also spam create threads too. I think that this issue wouldnt occur enough to warrant not putting the suggestion into effect. I guess you would just have to try and see if builders would spam it but I really dont think they would. I believe that most trolls are just people looking to quickly troll by spamming not people continually trying to spam the forums just cause.
-1 Eventhough all your arguments about trolls/spammers would not be a problem I don't really see the advantage of this. The shoutbox would turn into a new help channel where new players who just arrived on the server would just ask out anything. I think that it would completely ruin the shoutbox.
At the end of the day, trolls do anything and everything to do one thing, TROLL. but, why not just see what happens i guess.
-1 Reason: 15k isn't hard to get to apply and builders don't have to register in the forum. Registering and applying for resident some what proves you actually care and have server interest.
