I disagree.

When logging in, you're IP is already recognized. If the server recognizes it as an IP with a banned player, it will send out a notification. This can be done with a very light weight plugin.

We need to do something, but there's a lot of flaws in doing this (see other replys)

 

I see two problems here...
1. As already stated, family playing on the same IP. Yes, there can be exceptions made with the list of allowed IP shares. I accept that.
2. VPN. Virtual private network. Some are extremely easy to configure and they just give you one of thousands relay IPs from which you connect to the server. I assume somebody who invested 25$ into a MC account to use it for scamming might use that. In that case, any IP check would be pointless and the only way to find out would be by checking any transaction logs for money laundery.

(At this point, I wonder what /ipban really bans - the IP the player used when he was banned? Any IP he has used for a longer timeframe to join ECC? The IP that was most frequently used?)

 

The command I believe is /banip (ip), so you'd have to get their IP first before you ban, which can be seen on /seen.

 

Too easy to bypass. It wouldn't solve anything.

Something I'd like to ask about this suggestion, would you ban both the username and the IP? That seems ridiculous to me if thats the case.

My account was compromised and nobody believes me, but if ya'know a staff did an IP log dive, they'd see that my account was compromised, but thats none of my buisness.

 

If my brother gets banned for doing something stupid or my little 8 year old buddy get banned without knowing what he did. I should not be banned as well just because of this. And yes, VPNs are so easy to us. As another note, some people have multiple wifi routers that they can connect to. Wayy too easy to bypass.

 

Well then appeal and change your password. Tell the admins about it and they can do something

 

This is not the time nor the place to be accusing people of things and issues that you clearly know very little about

 

I am not accusing him of it. The admins banned him for it and I'm stating that. If his account was taken then he should appeal and get it sorted out

 

I generally have to agree with the points made above.

It's too much extra effort that can be bypassed anyway. If it was foolproof I would agree for more severe bans (scamming, trolling, hacking, exploits, etc) however all in all there's no need to waste time with that for more 'minor' offenses (grief, advertsing, etc - anything where they will get caught fairly quickly with minimal extra harm to others).
