Tell the user to tag the felon next time.

 

Historically, telling people to do/not to do things in that section hasn't worked very well. What makes this any different? Especially if it's not backed up with anything.

But then it becomes a hindrance to the process? And conceivably people might not come forward about certain things if they're afraid of messing it up?

(It's worth noting as well that with the complaint form, tags don't autocomplete. So you could misspell it or something without being prompted for the right name.)

 

Just have the mods remind the user to do it next time. Yes, some people won't follow it, but others will. And there's absolutely no reason to be against making things a more efficient, even if it's just a little bit.

 

That's not a requirement then, that's a suggestion. "We suggest tagging the person this complaint is against with a @tag" is different from "You are required to tag the person this is against with a @tag."

I don't mind suggesting it, I do mind requiring it (as this suggestion suggests).

 

"Required" gets more people to do it than "suggested". It can be "required" but not enforced.

 

"It's illegal, but nobody cares" is generally not a good incentive for people to do it.
