Although I personally believe the dislike for swearing is just an outdated view from generations ago, I get that people currently are against swearing.
BUT, for every person who hates swears, there is someone who doesn't, or even likes them. (mild swears, the ones that are allowed. like crap)
The rules we currently have are a nice balance between swearing and non-swearing, and I like to keep it this way. If I can't even say "crap", "damn" or "shit" any more then I would be rather upset. These words are a part of my day-to-day vocabulary, and it's the same for many others.

There is no "right" way to do this, because people can't agree on what is and is not morally "right", so let's just keep it the way it is.

 

Then why did this person bring this up as a suggestion? The rule is already in place.

 

No, it's not. He wants vulgarity to be prohibited whether or not it's directed at another player, as it is occasional slip-ups not directed at other players are allowed.

If anything, I would like a clear clarification on what is actually allowed. I've seen people say sh** in-game, and get scolded for language. I've even seen someone get warned for using the word "hell." Seriously? But in complaints on the forums, I see that even though foul language was used, it wasn't against the rules. A little consistency on enforcement would be nice. FYI, I have absolutely nothing against profanity. I use it daily. :p

Generations have a little gap between what they find acceptable for language.
Generation Y and Z, the two most recent. Are very tolerable for the most part for moderate cursing. The older generations, are not so much.

I believe the entire premise of this suggestion is to quell the gap between them, as the youngest generation now, is at risk of exposure to this when not intended to. Which is a valid point, but in whole, it'd be quite illogical to remove something from 95% of the community for a chance that the 5% might be exposed to it when not intended to.

IMO. It's not worth it to have an outright ban, the current rules are perfectly fine as is.

Now, from a development standpoint. I have to be 300% opposed. There is no such thing as a perfect profanity filter. Mojang tries with their username change filter, but there is no way possible to block every single possible combo of letters to make some sort of profanity.

The amount of time needed to develop this, would be immense due to it needing to be "perfect" to stop all profanity. Now, you alternatively could use just any old filter, and just moderate the ones that bypass it. Which is kinda what we are currently doing with the caps filter. Can you bypass it? Yes. Do we instantly warn for it? Yes.

Overall, it's a good idea in premise, but not a good idea in practice.

 

I mean certain cultures view swearing far less unfavorably and are more open to it than general American culture. This means that a very strict no-swearing policy could be alienating to players from those cultures and while, of course, we don't have to cater to them by allowing constant, excessive language, I personally don't see any harm with how the current rules are.
