I was speaking to the SA+s about this and I was told to make a public suggestion (@andrewkm) so here it is. My belief is that if you want people to listen to you, they have to respect you. So it's important to get to know the community as a staff member if you want them to respect what you say instead of ignoring the warnings and bans. I'd just like to suggest that staff members should be encouraged to speak in global instead of sitting in staff chat, as it helps so much to have a connection with the community as a staff member. I'm not saying they should have to talk constantly in global, but it wouldn't hurt to bring the conversation into global sometimes. Thanks
Some staff do this but its very rare, Also other staff will say that they do bring up stuff in Global, but not much tbh, I know this from previous experience and you do get sucked into staff chat as a staff member, But this does need to happen tbh, but you cant really make a rule up for it xD Maybe add it to the staff guideline thing if its not there already.
Yeah it's not suitable as a rule, and I completely understand how people get sucked into staff chat, it's more of a suggestion for andrew/nicit/phys/jamie to poke em into global
I try to be social when I'm on, but usually when I am, I'm either working, or doing something fun with you all. I'll certainly try to strike up more conversations when I'm on.
Aren't you not a staff member though? I thought you were just a developer. I guess devs are staff, but they don't have the same requirements or whatever.
I try and interact with everyone and be friends with the community as much as I can I don't really talk to someone and judge them on others opinions and bans etc. However, respect can go both ways !
Actually, I have a dissenting opinion I always feel like I am interrupting a staff member if I have a problem or question, if they are already involved in a conversation with others. It's not them giving me that vibe, just something I feel. I have always assumed that if Staff isn't talking in Global, they must be busy doing "behind the scenes " stuff. I KNOW they can't be just sitting around doing nothing, they're too busy for that Just my $0.02
Speaking from experience, staff aren't as busy as you may think, including GAs. There's a good amount of downtime when there's no forum work to do or if chat is behaving.
I always try to conversate with the community. Though I admittedly sometimes get sucked into focusing on mining or doing other things.
That's true. When I'm free I spend a lot of time speaking to whoever is online, more-so during off peak rather than peak times. During peak it's difficult because you have to watch chat much more closely, and it's also tough to keep a conversation going due to the speed of the chat. But yeah, off-peak I'm almost always speaking to people online unless I'm really concentrating on what I'm doing (build comp for example).
itt = in this thread - just for the people that don't know. Although all the staff members that have commented on this thread talk in chat a lot, other than one of them who I won't call out in public.
