Suggestion:
When the owner of a tool (/own) puts it into /rent, the tool cannot be broken. This ensures that tools won't be broken on accident by someone renting the tool. All that happens is the tool gets stuck at %1 durability and it cannot be used anymore until it is repaired. To keep this feature from being used as an everyday feature, the owner cannot use the /rent option (it will see that the owner of the tool is using the tool).

Reason:
I was watching chat and noticed some people who rented high value tools and accidentally broke them which led to them having to get lots of money to repay the actual owner. This also got the original owners annoyed because they want their tool. This is a win win solution for both the renter and the owner.

I don't think it would remove the need for extcommands++ because as I said before the owner won't be able to use the tool in rent mode. Also, it doesn't repair the tool, all it does is prevent it from breaking (but becomes unusable unless it is repaired).

 

Only the owner (the person who has the /own id or whatever) can initiate the /rent feature. When you do /rent, it checks to see if the person using it corresponds to the owner. So to get around it, you would have to name someone else as the owner, give it to them to initiate the rent feature, then you use it, give it back to that person to unown it and then they have to give it back to you.

Maybe a feature that only works with star items (melon swords, eff 7 picks). I had this in mind as a tool that everyone could use so renting could be safer.

 

Problem is that will ruin renting entirely. If someone owns a tool they will never be able to rent it out. So maybe we can combine your idea of /own and then my idea of /rent for the ultimate safe guard.

 

Sorry, I misread your post @stoler202. I thought that you wouldn't be able to break blocks at any time if you weren't the owner. That actually makes total sense. That sounds less confusing and even better than a rent feature.
