remember that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink
I think this is a noble discussion with noble (if lofty) goals
but when it comes down to it
your message gets across better with the stick than it does the carrot
3 day sticks aren't cutting it
and they haven't been for a long damn time

I think I lost track of what we were talking about with the stick/carrot argument... -

speak softly and carry a big stick kind of thing?

and that is not to say that this isn't a great idea
it is
we should all be on the lookout for a noble newbie that deserves a bit of attention and help
but honestly, its not going to have an effect on the serial scammers of today.
sure in theory it could make for a brighter tomorrow
but
i aint gonna hold my breath
I help people on the this server and they either a) expect more and then get pissed when i don't give it or b) disappear-

I know this sounds kind of like a heated argument but please don't take it that way. I think we have a common goal, which is to find the perfect solution to reducing scams or to help builders get started. Hopefully through the debate of opinions, we'll find the right balance. -

Yes the thought is for a brighter future. Its for reducing the chances of people becoming the scammers of tomorrow. -
I think this is a call to action for everyone to:
ANSWER the questions of builders and residents
to NOT give money to beggars, instead offer them a job or guide them to other money making opportunities
ENCOURAGE self reliance and responsibility-

Greetings,
I may be a culprit in this.
While I don't blindly give money to beggars, I am very "helpful" in the fact I try to "assist" builder/residents with materials, and even mayors to a certain extent. I understand that their a lot of children playing, and I figure if I can make the game a little easier to play in the beginning, they will come to enjoy the place and stay a while. There does always seem to be a point where they either learn or their begging leaves me saying "You need to mine/farm/fish/mine/farm more and stop just chatting all day and doing nothing." That is usually the last step. I really do try to encourage them as much as possible. I have bought many residents mayorship when I feel they are getting the idea of self-sustaining themselves. It is like a graduation present. Perhaps I am too easy on them. I just have a hard time ignoring them.
I would be willing to assist in whatever comes of this. Perhaps it will be benfecial to me as well, so I can learn to say 'no'.-

I voted "no". Here's what i think.
The type of people that have low morals (well low morals enough to scam on a video game) are going to end up scamming someone regardless if they were "fed" a little gift from a generous person after begging for money. They will still be the same person when they eventually lead to scamming someone as when they first started playing on the server. Your logic about "feeding the beggar instead of teaching them how to feed themselves" shouldnt reflect onto scammers. I believe that kind of logic needs to be reflected onto those that play the server and then quits after a short time of playing because they realize they are begging for scraps or they simply just lose interest.
The types of people that are asking for handouts are the kinds of people that will simply grow board with the server because they lose interest in trying to make a name for themselves. 9 times out of 10, those people are 13 year old kids that have the attention span of a squirrel, and rarely ever make the effort to succeed in this game on their own. I do, however, agree about helping out those that ask for help. In fact I am one of those people. I never asked for handouts though, I wanted to play this game to be apart of a community and create awesome things to share with the friends I make on the server. When I first started playing this server, I was very confused on what I needed to do to "feed" myself. I asked around, and learned the ropes from those with more experience then me. dork1877 actually is one of the many that significantly helped me out learning the ropes on this server.
When you say "You can feed a person or you can teach that person to feed themselves? " I think who that should more target are those people that are trying to learn the game (like I was a month or so back) instead of assuming they will turn into scammers because they cant figure out how to feed themselves on the server. In my personal opinion, once a scammer always a scammer. Even if they haven't scammed yet. Any well-mannered person with good morals will know that scamming is wrong, and they will do the honorable thing and avoid scamming others. Even if they resort to asking for handouts. They will surely not resort to scamming people once they're begging begins to go dry.
Anyway, thats just me shedding some light on a new perspective on the topic.
Thanks,
~Jorgy-

I have asked for an 85k loan ... even if I didn't reach the 85k for the deadline , I would pay him/her the money I got to pay them back and then collect the rest ... if no one banned me. But I have never scammed. Never . Revan I think This should be shown to Andrew.
