Suggestion: A harsher punishment for those that swear in chat

Description: I do NOT like to hear or see swearing and I am sure others would agree with me. Currently those who swear either get a warning when it happens or a warning after someone has complained about it via the forums. I would like this to change to a 10-30 minute tempban given out straight away which is cannot be appealed. I think this would reduce the amount of swearing in chat, even though there is only a little currently, and benefit the community by enforcing tougher sanctions to those who decide to swear in chat.

Any other information: Sorry if this has been done before! Also your comments would be appreciated, whether they are good or bad, thanks.

This probably won't happen, because on most servers swearing is accepted so when a builder joins the server, they may not know the rules and swear. As far as higher rankers go, there does need to be a change because 1) they don't have to swear. you have to type it out. you can stop yourself. and 2) they should have read the rules and should be familiar with them by now.

On a different topic, my issue with the whole warning system is the "stern warning." there are only so many ways you can warn someone by typing. I feel like the word "stern" makes the warning system seem more, let's say, disciplinary?

Maybe it could be the ban if you areranked resident and higher and if a builder swears once, sternly warn them then ban for 10-30 minutes depending on severity

Minor vulgarities, so long as not directed at anyone are currently allowed. Excessive vulgar language is handled just fine - in the end it rarely causes a large issue before staff move on from warnings to take more severe action. If you see the same player excessively swearing in chat, you're free to file a complaint.

Remember you can always /ignore someone and then you won't see their messages.

I understand this but I believe once a resident the player should be aware of the rules and should know not to swear if a moderator could simply do the ban command for the amount of time (10-30 minutes) it would probably stop them from doing it again. Also the /ignore command is a good feature but it wont help if somebody swears once ans you dont know it is going to happen,
Thank you for your feedback though, it is greatly appreciated :D

My honest opinion on this is that that is too strict of punishment. Certain people may just wait for the short tempban to expire, and then rage. I think the system we have now is the right balance of strict and lenient.

No. In many places and cultures, specifically in europe, swearing is an acceptable way of presenting your emotional state.
Where I live, in The Netherlands, you'll probably hear more swearing than you would anywhere else. It's normal here. So if I were to go on this server and swear just a little bit and then get banned, then I would simply leave and never return again. It's not okay to push people away from the server just because they have a different view on swearing and were raised differently.

Yet we push people away because they don't speak English?

The suggestion is about immediately giving out a 30 minute tempban when someone swears. Comparing this to people who can't speak English is silly, because there's many people who swear, and barely any who can't speak English. (the occasional european sometimes, I rarely see them)

So don't de-rail my argument by providing a situation that doesn't even pertain to my argument.

I have to agree with Kuke. Due to the different background of people it's sometimes difficult for people to watch themselves or remember where they're speaking, especially if they rarely or don't have to filter themselves in the real world. There are people who tend to use more colourful language in private chats, myself included, and wrong chats do occur from time to time. It would be silly to just hand someone a tempban for something that may not be within their control due to a world change or occasionally the server might boot them back into global due to a live reload and they may not notice.

Plus there's also the whole debacle regarding what constitutes as a swear word, which could cause problems for the staff team in handing out harsher punishments right off the bat, and I can see a whole slew of staff complaints arising from this being implemented. The warning system is much better for this because it doesn't allow certain staff members to have different tolerances that would result in a tempban; I know for a fact that there are several staff members who would be handing out 2-3 times more tempbans than other staff simply due to a discrepancy in the definition of an offensive term and opinion of the severity of that term.

Tempbans for first offence chat issues should never, ever be the answer, except in rare and very extreme circumstances. The staff are not allowed to hand out tempbans shorter than 30 minutes, and they are to be used sparingly for heated situations when it comes to handing them out in-game without an appeal.

I do agree that a lot of people should be in better control of their language in global, there are some cases where they just decide to go ahead and they're in full well aware of what channel they're in, the rules, etc. Tempbanning right off the bat however is incredibly extreme and I would only recommend it if they continue after a warning or two.

Who are you to decide what is allowed on the internet? The value of the internet is that for the most part it can be anything you want it to be, with your own rules if you create a website or game. It's very ignorant to say that just because you don't like swearing you have to "get off the internet."

Swearing/cursing punishments are at the staff member who is handling the situation discretion. If I were to say "ass", some moderators would warn me while others wouldn't. You get my drift? It's at the eye of the beholder in this situation.

All i am saying is swearing happens as much on the internet as it does irl not to many ways to 100% stop it so just ignore it.
