The Schutzstaffel, commonly abbreviated to the SS, was the elite military corps of the Third Reich, sort of a Nazi equivalent to the SAS or the Navy SEALS.

I wouldn't compare them to the Navy Seals. There is a bit of a difference.

This is true, but AFAIK the US Defence Force has no exact equivalent to the Schutzstaffel, or more specifically, the Waffen-Schutzstaffel and the Navy SEALs seemed like a good "analogy" to make if you will.
