Hello Everyone! If you clicked on this tutorial you most likely want to know more about how spreads in Sportsbook work. This tutorial includes explanations and some examples to make sure you really know what you're doing! Enjoy. I. Explanation Spread bets usually consist of Team A (favored) -number vs Team B (underdog) +number. In order to determine the winner of the bet, you take the final score of the event, and apply the handicap (number next to the team name). If a bet is -7, you would subtract 7 from the chosen team and then the winner of the adjusted score wins the bet. It's much easier to explain with examples. The favored team always has the negative handicap. II. Examples We'll use some recent spreads to help explain this further. 1) https://www.ecocitycraft.com/forum/sportsbook/seahawks-panthers.2173/ Final Score: 31-24 Panthers The handicap was 1.5 and the Panthers were expected to win. If we subtract -1.5 from the Panthers score, the final score becomes 29.5 - 24 Panthers. In this case, the Panthers bet wins. 2) https://www.ecocitycraft.com/forum/sportsbook/packers-cardinals.2172/ Final Score: 20-26 Cardinals The handicap was 7 points and the Cardinals were expected to win. If we subtract 7 from the Cardinals score, the final score becomes 20-19 Packers. In this case, the packers bet wins. Additional: Spoiler: Andrewkm's Explanation Q: What are spread bets? A: Your very best bet is to google sports betting spread betting. I will however give an examples below. Spread bets depend on the sport. The most common is basketball. You are betting on that team to win with a specific handicap. This is usually done when odds are extremely towards one side thus the team with a major disadvantage gets a handicap added (while the team with the advantage gets points taken away). It also depends on the sport, if you are confused on a specific sports spread bet please google it. Below is an example of spread bet in basketball. The game is Bucks @ Warriors. Example: Warriors -19 Spread Outcome: Warriors 120 - Bucks 115. -> You lose * 120 - 19 = 101 therefore the Bucks win as they have 115 points. Outcome: Warriors 140 - Bucks 115. -> You win * 140 - 19 = 121 therefore the Warriors win as they have 121 points. Outcome: Warriors 134 - Bucks 115. -> You push, and get your money back. * 134 - 19 = 115 therefore the Warriors and Bucks are tied as they both have 115 points. Example: Bucks +19.5 Spread Outcome: Warriors 120 - Bucks 115. -> You win * 115 + 19.5 = 134.5 therefore the Bucks win as they have 134.5 points. Outcome: Warriors 140 - Bucks 115. -> You lose * 115 + 19.5 = 134.5 therefore the Warriors win as they have 140 points. If there is a half point listed as in the second example, there is simply no "push" available, you either win or lose.
It's the difference (or higher) from the winning team's score with the losing team's score. The "+" and "-" just means which option is more favourable. For example, lets say Arsenal play Spurs (in soccer). The spread is Arsenal +1.5 and Spurs -1.5. Arsenal is the favourite. If the score at the end of the game is Spurs 2 - 0 Arsenal, the people who bet on Spurs -1.5 would win. Because the difference between the winning team's score and the losing team's score was greater than 1.5.
The odds of winning affect the amount of money that you will possibly win. The lower the odds are in your favor, the more money you get if you win. In other words, higher risk means greater reward.
