This happens to me too, just keep holding it down, after a few extra seconds, it should add hunger bars and subtract from your food. I found this out thanks to @Sameulspark
Just hold down right click until the "crumb" particles disappear. Yes, it is annoying, but there is nothing we can do until 1.3.2 comes out (supposedly fixes lag problems).
