I think that in limited quantity (certain # per town or per player), it would not be an issue. Item frames make fantastic decoration blocks and are needed for things such as town maps to help residents navigate the town. EDIT: Possibly just make a 3x3 town map application that mayor+ can apply for. Staff could grant permission to use 9 item frames just for that purpose and this would cover MULTIPLE towns with one single 3x3 map. Stores have been a nightmare since item frames died. :I EDIT: Granted, 1.18.1 performance might throw a wrench in even a single item frame ever being viable...
I'm gonna +1 this suggestion as I want item frames so badly for builds, but someone suggested this before (might've been me. idr). Stuff like player heads have a limit for the amount you can place per chunk, but iirc, player heads are not entities like item frames. I like the idea of limiting it per area, but because item frames are entities, they would chug the server pretty much regardless of where they are placed.
+1. I used to use item frames, I definitely miss them. I would love to see some sort of "per chunk" limit placed on these if they were to be brought back. Only thing that would make this a -1 is if they were never able to fix the dupe issue with item frames.
+1 they are great for decoration and information display and I think a limited (very) trial probably wouldn't hurt anyone, maybe with use only being allowed with certain features like extracreations.
The issue with item frames is not the quantity but how they rendered in Minecraft, even limited amounts are still detrimental to server performance. This will not solve the problem.
