So a while ago, we all thought Mojang was going to blacklist ECC in the next few days... and it never happened. At least, andrew did things with the IP so that we can log onto ECC with the default launcher. ECC doesn't require squidhq, so I don't see why we are still advertising it in the description box. I mean, it would only make sense to set "This server requires www.squidhq.com" as the description after we actually get blacklisted. The reason is simple: Some new users might see that and delete it right out of the server list because they think they need to download something. If the time comes where we actually get blacklisted for real, then it can be added into the description. It's unnecessary, and it could be replaced with a more appealing description so new players would want to join. If the server does get blacklisted, the description could be changed within a few minutes of andrew noticing. There's no reason to have the description advertising squidhq until the moment actually happens. Plus, most of the active players on the server already know about the whole blacklisting situation, so they would know what to do if connecting doesn't work. Just put something more appealing to new players here, until the time actually comes.
The whole point is to remove it entirely, and put something that describes the server, like: "The #1 Hardcore Economy Server!"
We already are blacklisted, though. It's just not working very well. Though I personally think it's better to give out rewards for using Squidhq so people will use it for the inevitable time when the blacklist actually works.
Like daily rewards for using squid? It would be a good way to get a new player using squidhq after a few days of playing, but it would have to be advertised somehow in-game like regular voting is, because new players don't usually go on the forums.
Pretty much giving them money for their ability to play. No thanks. It should just simply recommend SquidHQ as a more reliable way to connect. Neither force it, nor promote it.
Don't promote it, and people won't know what to do when they can't connect. Simple as that. Unless you want the player count to drop even more when that time comes, in that case, feel free to disagree. Yes. Like daily rewards. And being told when you connect to the server that you can get rewards for using SquidHQ and a link to installation instructions or something.
Is something like that possible to add? The reward would have to be given to the player in-game, since I'm pretty sure your internet browser won't be able to detect which launcher you're on.
The launcher was actually made to tell servers when you're using it. It was for this exact purpose. They even included a basic plugin to hook into.
I'm not opposing SquidHQ nor new players, but I find it silly to pay for using it. Sure we should encourage it, but at some point SquidHQ will be a requirement, and paying for using it would just be giving a starter bonus. There needs to be a way without rewards for a simple click on a different application.
The point in giving rewards for using squid is so that new players are encouraged to use it. Then, they'll be able to join if the normal launcher doesn't work. Basically it's a way to get them onto squid.
I don't think it's bad to have a bonus. People should be rewarded for using SquidHQ, and even more so, rewarded for playing every day. Daily rewards for SquidHQ users is ideal.
I however do. Voting is already a lot of money to be made in a few minutes of joining. No need to give extra bonuses, especially favorited towards new users. Give a man a fish, and he'll be hungry in an hour. Teach a man to fish, and he won't be hungry again. (Or something like that) But I guess we can just agree to disagree.
Let's say a new player joins on the normal launcher. What does he do? Stays on that launcher, because it works for him, because the player sees no need to switch. Then the time comes where connecting no longer works, and they quit. Or... they see a reminder telling them they have a daily reward to claim, and all they have to do is be on the squid launcher and click the link to claim it. It doesn't have to be much, maybe an extra 1k or something like that. I don't see it as breaking the economy, but rather helping it. That way, the player will remember to use squid because they need it in order to claim the daily reward. It's an easy way to get players to use the squid launcher. What would hurt the economy more is losing a ton of players.
First of all, how long do you expect this bonus to last? They can't just be given 1k everyday forever. Second of all, if they play on ECC long enough, they'd probably learn about the forums and SquidHQ. And I don't think they'd just quit because they wouldn't want to install squid. Its incredibly easy.
His point is that if the blacklisting were to go into full effect, newer players probably wouldn't think to google "SquidHQ" and go and download it. Players would most likely just find a server that works. This isn't about "people who've played long enough" and if you think it is, you're entirely missing the point.
Then how would they know about the bonus prior to connecting? Or, if the server description stated it, would they just download, hoping the bonus would be worth something. Even if there were to be a bonus it should be a one time thing, to just set the ball rolling, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to just click on SquidHQ next time they want to play. No need for daily rewards.
Who said anything about prior to connecting? I didn't. Playing long enough to know/care about the forums generally involves logging in more than once, and if there's a reward, people will want it. A one-time reward could be fine, but daily rewards encourage people to keep coming back, which is something ECC has rather been lacking with recently. So unless you're just against players... I don't see your point.
Really I'm not. But ECC never had any bonus just for playing, it was and is a hardcore economy server, not where money is as easy as just logging on for it. I just hope there's a better way of encouragement, that doesn't involve monetary rewards. From personal experience, I know that I kept playing on ECC because of what I already achieved. I already had something and I wanted to see where else I can progress. Maybe I'm just too old school, but times certain my have changed, perhaps you think there needs to be a new system. But I really have to sleep...
Still, ECC is having a hard time keeping new players. If we offer daily rewards for logging in, you'd be surprised by the amount of players that would stay and play on the server. Eventually they would come and play every day to continue their progress, not for a reward. If we found a better way to keep new players, ECC would actually start growing again.
