In the interest of creating a more friendly environment on ECC for all users. There have been some rule changes and some enforcement changes made to clean up chat and make ECC in general a cleaner place. Red is the removed parts of the rule, the green is the additions. Spoiler: Inappropriate Topics Clause Clause 3 - Inappropriate/Touchy Subjects and Discussions EcoCityCraft is a server community consisting of many age groups, religious groups, and political backgrounds. As such, there are many touchy subjects that we do not allow in our public channels in order to keep the peace and prevent arguments and flame wars from occurring. All chat must be kept appropriate and clean at all times. There is to be no discussion of anything deemed inappropriate for a workplace, including, but not limited to, sexuality, excessive violence, alcohol/drugs and inappropriate or dark humor. This rule extends into subjects about illegal substances or actions, including drugs. Politics, religion and suicide are common “touchy subjects”, however they are not the only ones. Should a staff member ask you to change a subject they feel is touchy and/or is causing the direction of chat to deviate towards an argument or flame war, you must drop the subject immediately. The civil discussion of politics is permitted only in the VIP channel. Discussing a banned user's ban reason and why they were banned is not allowed, however simply mentioning a banned player's username is allowed. Accusing other players of breaking any of the Server Rules is not allowed. Use the proper means to address these concerns such as speaking to a staff member or filing a complaint. These subjects are allowed in VIP chat except for any harassment, slander, directed vulgarity or discussion of topics including but not limited to pornography, illegal drugs, racism or anything illegal via American and Canadian law. The general chat rules regarding trade ads, spamming, foreign language and discussion of ban reasons still apply in the VIP chat Section 4, Clause 3; Regarding Inappropriate Discussions This means that yes, VIP is no longer a free-for-all chat where you can post whatever you want. The only exception is we will continue to allow civil discussion of politics on VIP. However if the discussion gets out of hand you still must discontinue the discussion at Staff discretion. Swearing: While the rules of swearing have not changed, enforcement of what we allow in regards to swearing has changed. Staff will be much stricter on swearing in general. Remember the way it was before summer of 2016? We are going back to that. This means that you cannot say “fuck” without censoring it properly. Any major or extremely disrespectful swear word use will be acted upon immediately. Rules regarding directed vulgarity are still the same. It is not allowed to direct “stfu” or any other similar connotation of vulgarity at anyone anymore. Changes to the Warn System: The warns to ban ratio has been modified. 7 warns = 2 day tempban 14 warns = 4 day tempban 21 warns = 6 day tempban Warns still wipe only after 30 days. In addition to increasing how many warns it takes to receive a tempban, you are being made aware that the Staff team will be issuing more /warn’s instead of verbals for chat infractions. This is a public notice of the changes so that no one is completely unaware when things start to be handled differently than you are used to. Please be advised, thank you.
Wtf.... the /warn system has always been really shiity. Honestly I feel just going back to regular moderation Verbal - kick - kick - ban. Is the best way to go. Instead of all this temp ban shit. I just... idk. The /warn system here has always been shit and abused. and Making it 21 warns - 6 day temp... Like what. How are you going to allow someone to get 21 warns with only a 6 day temp.
Seconded, getting 21 warns per month and then only getting a 6 day ban is ridiculous. That is almost a warn a day, for the 30 day refresh of warns. And I understand that staff will be more strict and more trigger-happy when using /warn (instead of verbal warnings), but that just seems a little off. Also, if you get banned outside the /warn system, will your /warn amount be wiped or stay the same?
Same... This basically means that someone gets to break the rules 21 times (in a month) and only gets a temp ban less than a week. I think before if someone had 21 legit complaints (or less) they were banned longer or just flat out banned and had to appeal. I think y'all are going in the right direction with be a lil more strict, just maybe rethink the whole warns to ban ratio. Everything else is exactly what needed. Warns only ever reset a month after they are given. You've never been able to harass people in VIP. The change is that global chat rules apply to VIP, with the exception of civil discussion of politics. In regards to the 21 warns to 6 days that you guys seem so torn up about, it doesn't mean that they won't get banned before that. A user might be banned at 18 warns, or 14, or 10. However, if they are unbanned relatively quickly those warns stick around. Warns are not wiped with a ban, unban, or even an automatic warn tempban. They are only wiped when a month has passed since that warn was issued.
These are a step in the right direction... In practice though I think it will be a step backwards. The inherent problem with /warn is that it wasn't meant to be a step between verbal warnings and real punishments, it was meant to replace verbal warnings. Nobody knows how many verbals go to a warn so saying "less verbals and more warns" is entirely meaningless right now. Likewise unless enforced consistently, also meaningless (which is really the biggest issue with the whole thing). I also think the scaling is... very weird. Personally I don't see the point in a 2 day tempban after 7 warnings. Either they're intentionally breaking rules (at which point staff should have noticed and done something more), or it's been really stupid spread out stuff where a 2 day tempban is really overkill when most likely a few hours at most would send the right message.
This post says it all. Personally I think we should either have verbal warnings OR a /warn system, not a combination of both. This will increase clarity into how the server is administrated and will stop situations where User A did something wrong and got a /warn and then User B does the same thing wrong and gets verbally warned and then gets upset because he didn't see User A get warned, or something similar. Personally I like the verbal warn, kick, kick, ban approach better because: A: If it's a one-time thing, it doesn't show up negatively or your record. B: You can just /note someone when you kick/ban them. C: None of this 7 warns, 14 warns, 21 warns, you're gone. You break the rules, you get warned, you break them again, you get kicked, you keep breaking the rules, you're banned. I understand that the warn system allows for some kind of log that shows staff when people have misbehaved and what they did that broke the rules, but I just think it's convenience for staff and confusing for users. A potential solution I can think of is if users can use a command like /warn list so they can see this for themselves, see for themselves how many warns they have and what they were about.

For people saying that the differences between ban times is too weak (7 for 24hrs, 14 for 48, etc) - It's currently multiplicative, but I can change it to be exponential. (7 for 24 hrs, 14 for almost 3 weeks, etc) We'll have to see how the system works before we can make changes to the handling of it.
Warns don't even mean anything to people with needing that many for that short a ban. That definitely needs to change.
