    briefly:

Using /smelt on either redstone or lapis ore gives you a version of that gem 'with metadata'. These aren't supposed to have metadata and when you try to stack or condense the redstone/lapis you got from /smelt, it won't combine with properly mined redstone/lapis

    Steps

    1. Silk an ore block (redstone or lapis)
    2. /smelt it
    3. Mine another ore of the same type w/o silk
    4. You'll see it doesn't stack

Doesn't seem to affect the other mining blocks (coal/diamond/emerald). @ClarinetPhoenix helped me test
