Denied [Suggestion]Put the cussing rule back to the way it was

All this Family friendly non-sense didn't start until sometime in 2013, and I've never liked it. Did the average age of the server change? Nope, average age is still probably the exact same. What did however change is the opinion of the staff, mostly due to staff changes, with conflicting desires from the user base leading to restricting swearing because "oh no won't someone think of the children" and at the same time expecting them to be more mature than people their age usually are.
Also what is the big deal about seeing coarse language, does it somehow hurt you on an emotional level? Are you really so thin skinned that 13 year old saying words you don't think they should be saying bothers you so much that you have to complain on the forum? This is the Internet, not your own personal hug-box.
-1 find a language filter mod/plug-in if it bothers you this much.

 

the problem is bigger than just staff. The current userbase of ECC has simply shown, time and time again, that they cannot handle this. A good portion of the userbase simply doesn't know restraint. ECC simply cannot feasibly allow swearing with its current userbase without a swear filter being put in place before allowing swearing.

"probably" is quite an understatement. It's more than just trolling. Scammers, harassers, hackers, etc. People keep getting free passes and it diluded the playerbase into.. this..

Alright I'll rephrase, almost complete lack of punishment in general other than repeatedly slapping wrists. Except in extreme circumstances, or when andrew intervenes

 

In the last week, for the times I have been on throughout different hours of the day, I haven't seen anything like the screenshot in the OP. Honestly, any time I even saw a "damn" people got warned. And any time I saw "f*ck" there was practically spam from Staff, and honestly it felt like some either disagreed as they warned or felt uncomfortable. A job is a job, though.

A major issue still lies within Staff. They need to be able to see, understand, and process context. As well, it is honestly key IMHO to have a good idea of who causes problems, likes to push rules, and the ability to to know if someone recently has any prior complaints and warnings for such (or anything in the same realm, such as harassment). Being well-read, up-to-date, etc. is highly important. In my mind, there is no excuse for not checking up on the Complaints, Ban Appeals, and any in-game warning system regularly. As for general knowing of who is who and what they are like... All I can say is have one eye on chat most of the time you are on, or communicate with Staff more often and make notes in Staff chat about who you think causes trouble a lot.

Otherwise, I also agree with the sentiment that a filter should be added before the rule is changed. And if it isn't, you need to make sure 100% that all Staff understand how things should be moderated - including newer Staff (even if they are returning). Don't leave them hanging. Also, if any changes are stated in a news post, general thread, Mod+, etc... Tag Staff. Tag everyone. Make ALL the people see. There's enough activity that a tag can pinpoint people to what is important, especially if a thread or other title isn't clear.

About ratings, though... I don't find them super useful on often yes/no only suggestions. There is only Agree and Potato. Potato is generally deemed for trolls, idiots, repeat rulebreakers, etc. Therefore the ratings don't let those who disagree actually be seen at a glance, and honestly unfairly represents both sides of an argument in the same way.

 

I'm a kid, and I really do not care about swearing. Swearing is like a second language to most people. If you are so butthurt then @andrewkm give us a filter or go to a different, overly-strict and low budget server that will die out in a week. idc about swearing, idc about the old rule, I just care about the new sg changes. -1

Tbh swearing doesn't bother me, for example in a sentence like this: 'I'm having a bad day', it's perfectly fine to replace the word 'bad' with 'shit'. It's just annoying when it's used purely to annoy people or to make themselves look cool because they don't understand what it means to be more than 12 years old. I have no idea what the thought process of the person that said 'Who the **** likes swearing anyway?' is. I'm not really down for more leniency on the swearing for this server just because there are so many people that abuse it and ruin it for others. Although a swear filter that's on by default when you first log-in would possibly work.

 

As well, if you were really annoyed by the screenshot, all you have to do is file a complaint for trolling, since that is obvious trolling.

Much has been said, I agree that kids don't need to be protected from the curse words they speak themselves, on the contrary: maybe they could teach us some. And I also agree that it's... annoying to see what was shown in Phys' screnshot.
I'll add just a few things:

1. if you curse because you want to convey more meaning to a sentence, swapping a "fuck" with a "f**k" conveys exactly the same, while if you curse for the sake of it you won't like your "fuck" being replaced with "f**k";
2. if you don't curse for the sake of it, it probably just slipped off your fingers because of some context that triggered it, or maybe you just thought you were typing in a private channel;
   
3. staff has much more important things to do than going around discerning upset people from silly brats and slapping the latter on their wrists.

Therefore the most logical thing to do is to establish a filter and put a stop to this useless fuss over something very annoying but after all almost harmless.
