After 3point's Silk Touch book escapade, the price was raised from $1750 to 10 netherstars ($5200 at current prices). $5000 is risky, as (or so it seems) you don't get the infinite paper - emeralds villager as much as people portray. Say you get 1 in 10. You are already in the hole $50k, and have to recoup your losses. Which, mind you, is not easy because you have to do other trades as well. Just putting that out there.

Honestly, villagers are a pain to make money with. They take a while, and emeralds per hour is pretty low. The cost of emeralds has fallen porportionately, making it even more difficult. And, if you have enough nstars to be buying enough villagers to crash the market, the you have a lot of money to spend with nothing to spend it on.

@goblizz Things have changed since 1.7 and I can assure you that it is actually easier now to obtain emeralds way faster than it was with the infinite paper trade and that coupled with the addition of xp from trades makes villager trading very profitable. Of course you do need to make a sizeable investment to get a good set up unless you get lucky with villagers found after a reset. I should add that the fact emerald prices have dropped as far as they have only means more people are likely to use the emeralds for ebooks, tools & armour resulting in the market being flooded with those which has a knock on effect on the value of xp.

@upmoon I have to agree with you that villager eggs should be removed making it only possible to find villagers in the mining world after a reset. This will help xp prices recover as we will see less players selling ebooks and tools obtained from trades and less xp coming into the market from such trades.

 

There was an eff5 villager... reset was the day after. Too bad i only got 5 books. :p

 

I agree with you upmoon. The villager spawn eggs cause too much of an issue, and I agree they are annoying. However, they should not disappear completely. They should maybe cost around 10k nstars so as they will be almost impossible to get but still possible. I have a feeling that they will eventually disappear but with time.

Even staff are allowed to take any economic advantage they can find - they play on the server just as we do. To stop this now only will benefit 3Point, to let it stay, then soon ebooks will only be $2-5 dollars and his huge economic advantage will be gone.

 

+1 a villager can trade any enchantment.. they also unfairly equalize values of different things.. 31 paper= 1 emerald. 13 emeralds = 1 enchant. yes there is a bit of RNG behind what trades you get. but to make a 7k exp enchant worth 60$ in paper is just stupid.. its just as bad as cacti farming. when cacti costed 1.65 per.. it destroys the exp market, and it destroys the enchant market too. i can purchase a silk book for 500$ right now. thats a 9k exp enchant.. even at 650$ per 1k exp thats a 5800$ enchant.. its worth less than 10% of its exp value.. its incredably destructive to the econ and needs to stop.. there is a reason why axes are disabled on pumpkins and why cacti farming is disabled. its to save the econ. do the right thing and slay villagers.

 

I understand what you are saying, however, I do not feel that 3point is causing our entire econ to crash. Experience crash was a known issue coming which is why Andrew decided back then to eliminate the etables on ECC.
All I am saying is that it can't be exactly as you say since the server has very specific rules about no players using exploits to profit and the penalties are quite swift and severe just like hacking.

 

I am unable to explain any of this since I have never seen hundreds of st1 ebooks being sold in auction, however, I am confident that our owners and staff are monitoring the situation and will do whatever is necessary to adjust our economy to survive.

 

I was playing for about an hour the other day, and I saw in auction chat.

Someone auctioning 20 silk books
Someone auctioning 40 silk books
Someone auctioning 25 silk books.

They sold for about $400 each.
I don't really have a side to this debate yet.

 

I change my opinion. The other day I saw over 500 silk books auctioned. Pretty crazy.

$2-5? the books cost more. A villager trades, 1 book and X* emeralds, for an ebook with Y** enchantement of level Z**.

* 5-64 emeralds
** level 1-30 enchantment.

Hey, there's a name for all this: industrialization. Enchanted books have been industrialized and their price has dropped accordingly. That means that everybody can afford one now, that's what we call progress. It doesn't mean that the economy is going to collapse: it will most probably be redirected into something else. Have no idea what — hell, if I knew that, I wouldn't waste my time writing here, but I would be working on it to get outrageously rich — but something for sure.
My kudos to those leading investors who got rich with mass production of ebooks.
