Usernames that break the spam rules like _VVVVVVVVVVVVVV. Sub's response is (if I understand it) that if someone has changed their name on minecraft to something like this, we need to have their forum name as the same as their in game name, therefore the staff need to change the name. However people are not allowed to change their name to things containing obscenities and making people have nicknames etc is just playing with the trolls rather than dealing with the underlying issue.
I think it should be handled the way inappropriate skins are, user is kicked with the message to change their skin and if they come back wearing the same, temp ban. Or at least that is who it appears to go down. So, someone comes with a spammy name or nick gets kicked with a simple message to change it and they can come right back when fixed but if they chose to do it again they get a temp ban and have the motivation to knock it off. We get rid of spammy names in chat but no one gets banned for ignorance. +1 if the user can be warned in this way first.
Or.. hear me out here.. Don't bother with rules regarding spammy usernames. It's dumb. Let people choose the usernames they want and like. Why should anyone even care? I can understand inappropriate usernames. But a rule just because you think they're annoying? Let's not.
I would totally agree with that line of thinking but we already are in a realm where people get warned in chat for saying "laggggg" and it's been decided on an administrative level that spamming isn't tolerable in any other circumstance. So I don't understand why it would have ever been allowed in the first place. But you know, it's not killing me or anything just weird.
One, usernames are already in chat. Two, usernames that are inappropriate are subject to banning according to the same rules about vulgarity as chat, so I don't think spam in usernames is arbitrarily allowed to spam because it is a username. If usernames were held above all the other rules I'd agree with you but in all the other ways I can think of they are held to the rules. Users get reprimanded for inappropriate ones. I've seen mods demand nicknames impersonating other users to change their nick. If it was really all about just whatever someone wanted, why would that not be allowed? Because it is annoying and confusing, just like spammy ones are. But I won't argue with you further kuke, I respect that you disagree.
I think there does seem to be a lack of desire by the staff to sort out of a lot of the irritating and juvenile behaviour on the server. As I'm not a teenage boy I perhaps find this less acceptable than I otherwise would. I was amazed there was no desire to stop people spamming their casinos too. I'm aware that other 'grown ups' have just left global. It really does make me wonder why I play here.
There is an explicit separate rule that bans inappropriate usernames, for the same reason as inappropriate skins. There's a difference between inappropriate usernames and usernames you consider "annoying" or "juvenile". Inappropriate names cause actual problems, and have been banned since day 1. Hell, a lot of them are even automatically filtered by mojang already. Annoying usernames are just that, annoying. There is no harm. There is only the immature response to them. (People complaining about them = immature, imo) Just ignore them. Why the hell should anyone care about those usernames? And if you're annoyed by them you could always just /ignore them. You won't need to see the "annoying usernames" ever again. And if you don't want to /ignore them, well, I've got nothing to say besides "sucks to be you"
I think you're reading hostility from me that isn't there. I just agree with this suggestion because I believe it makes sense, is consistent and that many of the offenders in this case are doing so to be trollish as well as believing there to be zero reason to protect anyone's right to 10 underscores or whatever. I don't want to draw and quarter these users or drown them as witches. I am not tossing and turning at night because I saw too many V's. It is just a suggestion I like. I'm genuinely sorry I've offended your sense of username amnesty or if you thought I came off like a jerk or like I was trying to pick a fight. And it is awesome to be me, thanks
People care about them because they are spammy. Spam is annoying, it is also banned. Instead of banning spam should we just have to ignore people who spam or "sucks to be you"?
You're literally arguing that just because the rules are the rules doesn't mean that they can ever be changed.
Don't worry about hostility, I come off strongly no matter what I say, it's just in my nature. I don't have anything personal or hostile against you or anyone. (unless I get insulted, but that didn't happen here)
Those are two sentences. Completely separate from each other. To me it makes no sense to make them apply to the rule. Which is exactly why they're exempt from those rules. I wasn't arguing they shouldn't change because they already are in the rules. I'm saying it's because it makes no sense and it's dumb to limit usernames because of minor annoyances.
+1 But permanent ban is not recommended, whereas tempban will be imposed to them who did not change their name past the deadline.
I like some sort of punishment of this level but a temp-ban would be confusing. The username would not be allowed for a whole month, what happens after the temp ends?
Say a new user just joined the server, and their username was a little spammy, but that is the username what they wanted to have, you just want to straight out ban people? Yes, you do get the few people who decide to troll by having all caps and "spammy" usernames, but where do you draw the line with this? Do you specify that any username that is 16 characters is now deemed as spammy, or that any username that have over 4 caps is spammy? How would you incorporate this into the rules, as right now I can think of several people on ECC that have 16 character names, but are not in caps, that no one has a problem with, now if they changed their username so it was in full caps, your saying they get a ban until they change it? I think the current system is fine, where andrew just gives them a perma nick until they decide to change it, less hassle than just banning loads of people just for the username they wanted. -1
A name is creative and just because some users are less creative than others does not mean they should be punished. -1
Let me just suggest some sort of way we could implement this: Spammy Usernames are not allowed: Spammy usernames consist of: Multiple repetitions of letters (i.e. IIIIII or iiiiii) Multiple repetitions of symbols (i.e. _____ or ----) If a user has just joined the server they will be given a 35 day Grace period in which they will be reminded of this rule and told to change it. After the 30 days has passed, they have 5 days in which they will have to change their name both in game on the forums. If the user has been a member for over [a certain amount of time] action will be taken if they decide to choose a spammy nickname. That is like a 5 minute version I though of, but just an idea
