I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but I'll put it here because it's a suggestion. So recently on the ecc world there have been a lot of problems with lag in specific key areas that has gotten so bad that it keeps some players from enjoying many features and may be keeping new people away from the server. Listed in order of importance are these areas. 1: spawn, from my standard 60 fps going into spawn drops me all the way down to only 10 fps. 2: The portal room, upon entry my fps drops to 6. 3; The market. Where I only get 4 fps As a result getting to either the portals or the market is a pain and using either one of them is almost impossible. There is much speculation as to what causes the lag but I'm very sure that it can be attributed to both portals and signs alike. There are several possible ways to fix the lag the first option would be to redo all of these areas objectively focusing on reducing the number of signs and portals significantly this however would take a ton of time and world editing also there is no guarantee that the world would be less laggy than before. That I why I would like to suggest that we form the ecc hub world. Since the rising world is coming soon this would be the perfect opportunity to make a lag free world that binds rising and legacy together. I’m not sure where I heard this but I seem to recall that Andrewkm once said that the current mainworld would act as the main spawn however with the current state of the spawn area I object to such an idea because it means that the lag will continue. To reduce the lag there are a few key things that must be done in the hub world in order for it to be successful. 1: nessicary rendering must be reduced. This means that there can be no caves or random entities in the hub world. To make this possible I suggest we set it in a flat world this will reduce lag and even speed up the building process. 2: set a limit on signs spawners and entities that can be placed per chunk. I’m not sure what the exact limit should be in my opinion some serious testing should take place to discover how many signs a chunk can hold before it causes lag on a medium strength computer. Also no portal towers like we currently have unless they can be built without causing too much lag. 3: make the shops only 1 floor tall and only 1 shop per chunk. 4: make a hunger games lobby room this could be fun and it would move people away from chunks where people travel. 5: organize the world so that it can expand infinitely I’m not sure if I’m explaining this very well but we can’t set up our hub world so that it limits expansion. For example the current spawn can’t expand outward meaning that it will build up lag the more we add if we are going to add something new to the hub it will need it’s own place that doesn’t lag other places. The most basic way we could organize such a place would be like this. as you can see each part of the world has it's own space and can move outwardly without ever running into towns or walls. There are a host of other possible benefits that could come with the hub world as well giant ecc signs would be easy to setup statues would never need to come down and a variety of other server features could be added. So any ideas? suggestions or reasons why this would be plain dumb? let me and the rest of ecc know then.
My main thought is that condensing all the lag-causing things into one world would make it impossible for any older/cheaper computer to handle. (For example, any server with a hub I go on, I immediately log out due to lag and it being impossible to move.) The portal area is bad enough as it is... Putting it with even more portals, signs, and shops? Lots of lag. Wouldn't matter if the hub had it's own world or not - it would still be laggy, and then no one could access anything. I'd rather have the lag spread out and much less, in various areas, somewhat usable - rather than all in one place, and impossible to do anything in due to lag. I understand that another world would, in a couple of ways, be less laggy, but it wouldn't much matter if all the laggy things are there, would it? I don't think it would... Thing is, we are not a mini-game, skyblock, PVP, etc server. We are one of the very few economy servers that is thriving, and we have many signs and portals. Using a hub method like the mini-game and PVP servers won't work for us. As for limiting amount of signs in chunks and such, that would be interesting and probably help. However, the spawn competition just ended; many people put in 30+ hours building spawn (I know my team...or at least myself... probably put in over 55 hours). It would be unfair to tell them "okay, well, now we are having another spawn competition, or a hub competition (making the spawn one null and void now), and you have to figure out the chunks by yourself. Go spend another 25-50 hours of your life doing it. Sorry and thanks." If the user spawn market can get a giant rehaul, and the portals can get a giant rehaul, that would be good. Make them each have their own worlds (like Aether and Nether do), and make their current portals in spawn go to their new worlds. For the shops in spawn, I think they will already be better off, considering some designs entered into the spawn competition. Some have the shops spread throughout the map, so there is less lag in one area, therefore less noticeable and harmful. edit: I'm not entirely shooting the suggestion down - I just think that a hub specifically would not work for our server's genre.
Well funny thing I didn't know that a server spawn contest was going on... I've been gone for a while and just got back recently that being said maybe the hub could be incorporated into their spawns later on. as for a hub my suggestion isn't to condense the features but to drastically reduce lag by spreading things out while the walk between them may get larger lag would be reduced and people would feel more comfortable in game. For example right now the survival games are right next to the spawn causing lag while people are running through causing more lag. if a hub world was used to put some distance between these points it could possibly reduce lag. In addition if the people are more spread out by the strategic placement of our server features than lag would indeed be reduced.
I guess I don't appreciate the lag that is at spawn because I don't experience it. I have a good internet connection and my computer has plenty of resources, so the cuases of lag are not enough to hurt my experience. I wonder if there was a way I can handicap my resources to experience it.. perhaps limit my connection somehow, and reduce my minecraft back to 1gb ram... The idea of a hub world is interesting -- but I sort of think of it like the internet. A hub links dis-similar things. Most everything on ECC interlocks together. We don't have completely separate game modes like creative, various game modes, factions... Everything is tied, and primarily joined by towns in Main World/Legacy/Rising. Though a hub may reduce lag, I don't think it is enough to warrant a separate world for spawn. There must be things/regulations/ways that can be done to mitigate the lag potential. Clarity on that issue would present a decent guideline for what towns can do too to reduce their lag or adjust town planning.
